I was fortunate enough to be a part of Greenrock’s concert, “Heather Nova and Friends” this weekend, and the event was a huge success.
Greenrock is promoting environmental awareness and encourages residents to think about the choices they make as consumers and how these choices affect the environment. Bermuda imports virtually everything it consumes, and we are the epitome of a disposable culture. Consider that the island’s natural beauty is its strongest selling point, and it makes you wonder how people (including myself) can be so irresponsible. Then add the never-ending development and disappearance of green space, and I wonder where we are headed. Short-term thinking leads to short-term goals.
So, anyhow when German producer/DJ ATB (who I’ve never heard of but is ranked highly by popularity contests) cancelled his gig at the last minute, the next, next, next choice was me. I was a bit nervous as (1) I haven’t even touched a record in over 12 months and (2) electronic music isn’t really that popular here. Since I was playing last, I had the whole day to be nervous.
The whole concert was so professionally done and so successful, by the end I didn’t care how well or badly I did. I had met some really great people, and many families got to enjoy a day that threatened rain but never did. Since there were a bunch of little kids there, I started my set with Sesame Street Fever’s “C is for Cookie” and then got into the real stuff. I’m happy to say that it went really well, and people were dancing and enjoyed themselves, as did I. The only problem is that now, everybody thinks I’m ATB. Even the newspaper!
